On arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), we will be met in the arrivals hall by a local representative and escorted to your waiting private chauffeur guide who will transfer us to our Negombo hotel. Check in and relax after your international flight.

Your private chauffeur guide is at your disposal for the duration of your trip. During any free time, your private chauffeur guide is available to take you on any extra sightseeing, shopping, or to a recommended lunch or dinner. You will be given your private chauffeur guide’s mobile number at the beginning of your trip and he or she can be reached at any time during your stay.

Up early and depart Negombo for Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The orphanage is a captive breeding and conservation institute for wild Asian elephants. Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world.

In 2023, there were 71 elephants, including 30 males and 41 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala. The orphanage was founded to care and protect the many orphaned unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation. We’ll see the elephants being worked and fed and we may be lucky enough to hand feed some of the baby elephants. Then a stroll down the road will see the elephants bathing in the Maha Oya River.

We have time to buy our own lunch here overlooking the river. Now time to drive to Sigiriya in the Central Province Region, our home for the next three nights.

This morning, we visit the ancient capital of Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa was declared as an UNESCO heritage site in 1982. It became the middle historic capital of Sri Lanka (1017 –1235 AD). Our private chauffeur guide will show us well preserved remains of temples and ancient homes and describe the meaning behind the relief and carvings that can still be seen today.

Stop for lunch enroute – buy your own lunch.

Back at the hotel, we have time to relax and unwind in the hotel grounds, take a dip in the pool or perhaps enjoy a spa treatment (own expense). We have excellent views of Sigiriya Rock Fortress – you can ponder if you’re up for the climb tomorrow!

After breakfast, proceed to Sigiriya Rock Fortress and climb the monolith, one of the most extraordinary artistic complexes of its time (477 – 498 AD). Declared a UNESCO heritage site in 1982, this magnificent citadel allures artistic and architectural curiosity from around the globe.

Return to the hotel late this morning with time to relax, swim in the pool and enjoy some lunch (own expense).

Later this afternoon, we take a private jeep safari tour of Minneriya National Park. It was declared a national park in 1984, making it the only one in the Central Province. It is a paradise for nature lovers and one of the best places to observe elephants.

Note: since elephants are migratory animals, we may substitute your visit to Kaudulla National Park or one of the surrounding Eco Parks to ensure we maximize your opportunity of seeing the elephants based on the elephant locations.

Morning kicks off with a picturesque drive from Sigiriya to the historic city of Dambulla. Explore the Dambulla Cave Temple, an iconic Buddhist pilgrimage site with intricately decorated caves filled with statues and vibrant frescoes. The guide will narrate captivating tales of these ancient caves, immersing you in centuries-old Buddhist heritage. Afterward, enjoy a local lunch, experiencing authentic Sri Lankan flavors amidst the bustle of Dambulla town.

Afternoon: Head towards Kandy, the charming hill capital. En route, stop by Matale Aluvihara, a serene rock temple nestled in a valley of lush greenery, where your guide will introduce the rich history behind this revered site. Arrive in Kandy by early evening and settle in for a night stay surrounded by rolling hills and cultural warmth.
