Adams Peak

The sacred footprint was found during King Valagambahu’s exile in the mountain wilderness, 2100 years ago, during whose reign (104–76 BC) Adam’s peak has a history.

The ancient forest that encircles the peak is referred to as the peak wilderness because of its majestic ruggedness and its raging waters that cascade spectacularly from great heights. Although climbing Adam’s Peak during the off-season is more rewarding because you won’t encounter any people, it is extremely dangerous from May to August during the monsoon season. Adam’s Peak is regarded as being open from December to May.

Horton Plains National Park

In the shadow of Kirigalpotta (2395m) and Totapola, Sri Lanka’s second and third-highest mountains, Horton Plains is a stunning, desolate area with wonderful hikes (2357m). The “plains” are an undulating plateau over 2000 meters high that is covered in untamed grasslands and dotted with rocky outcrops, filigree waterfalls, misty lakes, and patches of dense forest. Though many of the larger animals are very elusive, the unexpected diversity of the landscape is matched by the variety of wildlife. The rewards for birdwatching are great.

Knuckles Mountain Range

The Knuckles Mountain Range is shaped like a human fist, as its name suggests. Knuckles Mountain Range, which covers 234 sq km and borders the Kandy and Matale Administrative Districts, is one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful trekking and hiking destinations. It has about 35 mountain peaks that rise above 915 m. Nevertheless, because of the numerous leeches and lengthy duration, it is not very popular or advised.

The Knuckles Mountain Range can be reached from two main points. Riverston, Deanston, and Meemure are located on the south-eastern flank and provide access to the Knuckles Mountain Range from the northern flank. Pitawala Pathena Trail, Alugallenna Trail, Nitro Cave Trail, the trail to the 5 peaks, Dothalugala Trail, and Mini World’s End are the trails in the largely undeveloped and rugged terrain, respectively (via Deanstone forest office). You can also visit Meemure, a rural community in the Knuckles range that draws a lot of tourists because it has a lot of other trails and streams with crystal-clear water. Camping at Ash Cave, a prehistoric cave in the forest, is a lovely experience. A sizable cave located far inside the forest is called Nitro Cave. Birdlife is abundant along these trails, which connect to footpaths that lead tocardamom gardens, Kithul palm groves, and tea plantations.

Maduru Oya National Park

One of Sri Lanka’s national parks is the Maduru Oya National Park. On November 9th, 1983, a national park designation was made for it. It was built as part of the Mahaweli development project and serves as the reservoir’s catchment area. It is 58,849 hectares in size, situated 314 kilometers from Colombo in the dry zone, and serves as a refuge for wildlife.

The habitat for elephants in the Maduru Oya National Park is well-known. Wild animals such as leopards, sloth bears, sambhur, spotted and barking deer, wild boar, and wild buffalo are among the non-elephant wildlife. The park is also home to the Toque Macaque, Purple-faced Langur, Slender Loris, Black-Naped Hare, Indian Pangolin, and a variety of squirrel species. Over 100 species of birds, including the Lesser Adjutant, Woolly Necked Stork, Openbill, Painted Stork, Racket Tailed Drongo, Yellow-fronted Barbet, Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl, and Spur Fowl, are also found there in addition to wild animals. However, within the boundaries of Maduru Oya National Park, there is a group of Veddas who are native to Sri Lanka.

Minneriya National Park

One of Asia’s best animal experiences is the amazing elephant gathering at Minneriya National Park, which is situated in the district of Polonnaruwa (Pulathisi Pura) of Sri Lanka’s North Central Province. Additionally, Minneriya National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s 70 IBAs, or Important Bird Areas, and is a recommended location for bird-watching tours there.
More importantly, according to biodiversity conservationists, this complex is one of the most crucial ecosystems in Sri Lanka’s dry zone for the long-term conservation of elephants (including displaced individuals) and associated flora and fauna.

Yala National Park

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most popular wildlife attraction because of the high likelihood of meeting and variety of species. It has an unrivaled diversity of bird, animal, and reptile life in the country, with notably high densities of its two keystone species, elephants and leopards. Current estimates place the leopard population at around 70, and because they are the apex predator in the park, they are less afraid than lions in places like Africa. This means that you are more likely to witness a leopard in this area than anywhere else on the planet.
