Knuckles Mountain Range
The Knuckles Mountain Range is shaped like a human fist, as its name suggests. Knuckles Mountain Range, which covers 234 sq km and borders the Kandy and Matale Administrative Districts, is one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful trekking and hiking destinations. It has about 35 mountain peaks that rise above 915 m. Nevertheless, because of the numerous leeches and lengthy duration, it is not very popular or advised.
The Knuckles Mountain Range can be reached from two main points. Riverston, Deanston, and Meemure are located on the south-eastern flank and provide access to the Knuckles Mountain Range from the northern flank. Pitawala Pathena Trail, Alugallenna Trail, Nitro Cave Trail, the trail to the 5 peaks, Dothalugala Trail, and Mini World’s End are the trails in the largely undeveloped and rugged terrain, respectively (via Deanstone forest office). You can also visit Meemure, a rural community in the Knuckles range that draws a lot of tourists because it has a lot of other trails and streams with crystal-clear water. Camping at Ash Cave, a prehistoric cave in the forest, is a lovely experience. A sizable cave located far inside the forest is called Nitro Cave. Birdlife is abundant along these trails, which connect to footpaths that lead tocardamom gardens, Kithul palm groves, and tea plantations.
